A Quick Cover Up
There are many relics of a distant past that come with buying a house from the ’80s. Phone jacks, for example.
I removed the jack and covered it with a solid face plate, which was better, but still not cute.
My first rule of home renovation/decoration: try to use what you already have first. It was a bit challenging to find something thin enough and long enough to fit in that space, but after rooting around in the random-stuff-room and the garage for several days, I came up with this:
It was given to us by one of the Bear’s aunts along with several other frames when we bought our first house. This is a super cute idea for gardeners, btw. However, nothing I plant survives, so I decided not to put up the pretense that seeds and I have any kind of healthy relationship.
My search also turned up a can of white spray paint, a can of oil rubbed bronze spray, and scrapbook paper. The most time consuming part of this transformation was picking out which designs of scrapbook paper to use and how to arrange them. I spray painted the frame oil-rubbed bronze to tie in with all the fixtures and painted the mat white to make the scrap book paper pop. Finally, I used the seed packets as my template and taped the rectangles of scrap book paper to the mat.
Even though the curtains lend plenty of color and pattern to the space, I was still feeling a lack of cuteness. This little piece gave the breakfast nook just the extra bit of personality it needed.
Bonus points if you noticed that the deck and railing seen through the bay window are different in the before and after pictures. We’ll get around to talking about that one of these days.
